The nests sat in a circular formation, the older apprentices had their nests in the middle and everyone else claimed an outer ring. The beds of moss were left vacant aside from one which was pushed up against the furthest back wall, right up to the sloping hillside. Rosepaw was curled up; face nestled so deep in moss it was hard to imagine how she could breathe. If her brother hadn’t been required to go along on the sun-high patrol, he would have dragged the nest back with the others; positioning it next to his own. The tom acted as a buffer between his sister and the outside world. Without her brother, Rosepaw didn’t know how she would be able to function. The pretty she-cat peeked out of her hiding spot. Windclan camp was humming with activity. She saw Coalnose, her mentor, organizing a hunting parting and Morningpaw replacing the elders’ old bedding. Others were dashing across camp, their jaws carrying large scraps of moss. Her eyes widened, her heart rate beginning to quicken. They’re cleaning out the nests?! She blinked, forcing herself to slowly rise from her spot. It wasn’t uncommon for warriors and apprentices alike to clear out all the old bedding in exchange for fresh moss beds. However, Rosepaw felt disturbed by the notion. She didn’t want a new nest. The one she had was the nest she claimed after her terrifying apprentice ceremony. It had become her safe haven. I need to move it… hide it… Her stomach churned, her legs feeling weak and shaky. I can’t… If she tried to hide it, Rosepaw knew the others would ask her what she was doing. She would draw attention to herself. The thought alone sent a pool of bile up her throat. She touched the nest, paw tracing the worn down moss. When her eyes started to grow hot and sting, she fought back the urge to cry. This is stupid, she wanted to scream at herself. It’s just a nest, why can’t you be normal?! Rosepaw took a breath, willing herself to remain composed. She moved away from the apprentice den, painfully aware of each stride. Her clan mates didn’t spare her a glance but she couldn’t shake the feeling that they were watching her. The young she-cat avoided their gazes and pretended to walk as if she had some sort of purpose; a destination to be because someone needed her. If someone stopped her, she knew she wouldn’t be able to find her voice. There was nothing she could do but hope she went undetected as she walked through the throng of clan cats. |
